Your Car, Before You Get There

A global leader in vehicle security needed an app that lets users remotely lock, unlock, and start their cars. We designed an interface so intuitive that complex connected-car technology feels as familiar as the key fob in your pocket.

The SmartStart app centers the primary action—remote start—as the dominant interface element, mirroring the central button on a physical key fob. Familiar lock, unlock, and trunk icons surround the primary action, creating instant recognition.

Connected Car UX Built on Muscle Memory

From challenge to transformation

The Approach

We built our design on existing mental models—the central locking remote that users already know. The primary 'Smart Start' action takes center stage. We tested wireframes with real users, iterating through three versions to eliminate confusion. Experimented with gestures, but prioritized familiarity over novelty. The result: a laser-focused, feature-rich app that engages users from the first tap.

The Challenge

Connected car technology creates entirely new digital-to-physical workflows. Users needed to control their vehicles remotely, but the experience had to feel natural—not like learning a new gadget. The app needed to work with the client's entire product line while maintaining brand consistency and zero learning curve.

Making Connected Cars Feel Familiar

Viper (Directed Electronics) is a global leader in vehicle security and connected car technology. Their SmartStart system lets users remotely lock, unlock, and start their cars from anywhere—but the mobile experience needed to match the sophistication of the hardware. SpiceFactory was engaged to redesign the mobile apps for iOS and Android, creating an interface that would make complex connected-car technology feel as familiar as the key fob in your pocket.

Users already have a mental model for car remotes. We designed around the fob they already know—not some novel interface.

User Experience Impact

Intuitive design that makes complex connected-car technology feel like second nature.

For Drivers

  • Zero Learning Curve — Key fob mental model means users know what to do immediately
  • Remote Control — Lock, unlock, and start your car from anywhere with visual confirmation
  • Multi-Layer Feedback — Visual, push, and status confirmation so you always know 'did that work?'
  • Apple Watch Support — Deep OS integration with widgets and notifications

For Fleet Economics

  • Full Product Line Support — One app works across entire Viper portfolio from day one
  • Reduced Support Costs — Intuitive design eliminated confusion-related customer support calls
  • Brand Premium — Polished mobile experience reinforces Viper's premium positioning
  • Platform Consistency — Design system ensures quality across future connected-car products

For Product Operations

  • Three Iteration Process — Real user testing through feature-rich, gesture-based, and focused versions
  • Familiarity Over Novelty — Gestures were clever but not intuitive; simple buttons won in testing
  • Native Implementation — Swift and Java for platform-native feel with deep OS integration

Connected and Effortless

The redesigned app launched to positive user reception. Zero learning curve—users started and locked their cars immediately. The familiar mental model eliminated confusion. And the entire Viper product line was supported from day one. This is what happens when you design connected car experiences around how users already think, not how engineers wish they thought.
